Hi race fans -
Now that was my idea of a great MOM day!
Alan and Ron said it once, but it just a great day! Lots of challenging
wind. BIG lift. Great company. Great attitude. I think that lower slope at
Temple is just a great place for this kind of event. The ridge is sharp.
You
can get a big bump off the far pin and a lot of help in the middle from
the
rising air. Plus the climb out is nothing short of phenomenal. On one
start,
I gave Dave some advice I thought was good. Start diving at around 3 sec.
He
was so high, he started around five seconds and was still 40 yards from
the
start line when the race stared. He was just about spec'd out. He just
couldn't get the plane down fast enough. It's a long walk, but it only
takes
about ten minutes. It just feels like it takes all day.
I want to thank everybody for all the great cooperation. And I especially
want to thank you all for showing up on time. That makes it easier for
everyone. Nice job.
I arrived about ten minutes before noon at the bottom of the hill to find
about ten guys waiting for me. They grabbed most of the stuff from my car
and headed up. Three more arrived before noon. One guy arrived about six
minutes late, but had some unexpected traffic problems from an hour and a
half away. Whodathunk it on Sun morn?
It was reported that two more guys were on the way so I arranged the
matrix
believing they were really on the way. One of them never showed. The other
didn't show for two hours and left early.
When I got up to the top of the hill, we already had wind and most of the
guys were in the air getting a feel for the slope.
Setting up the lights took the biggest time. We eventually got them aimed
OK. Even with the light setup, we started the first race before 1PM.
We flew a full schedule for 10 to 12 racers in 48. We got five rounds,
four
heats per round. Everybody raced every body. You can see the results
attached. Congrats to Bill. Three way tie for second, won by Dave in the
fly-off. Nice going, Dave.
In 60 inch, we flew a full schedule for 7 to 9. Five rounds, three heats
per
round. Everybody raced everybody.
We packed it up and left about 5PM.
I do believe the guys that entered both classes got as much racing as they
wanted. Thirty five heats, for maybe 80-90 pilot races. Each guy that
entered both classes and finished, got a total of 10 races. That's a lot
of
MOM racing.
The conditions were challenging, the lift was BBBIIIIIGGGG, the company
great, the racing a lot of fun, all in four hours on the hill.
I also have to thank Bill and Warren for running into each other in the
third 60 inch heat. It looked like to me like it was going to be for all
the
marbles. It was. THANKS!
