Tehachapi Flying Site - Convict Hill, Tehachapi, CA USA                     Click here for Dovetail Slope
Just a few miles upwind from the huge Windmills, Tehachapi usually has very good lift. Landing is easy, but retrieval can be a problem due to a tremendous amount of prickers in the grass ... but the amount of lift more than makes up for it.  There are no restrooms nearby, so do your business in town!
Directions from Los Angeles area:

The directions to the Convict slope are:

  • Take the 14 Freeway up past Lancaster
  • Turn left onto Highway 58 when the highway forks just past Mojave Airport
  • Go up past the windmills and then drop into the Tehachapi valley.
  • Exit Hwy 58 at Tehachapi Blvd/Hwy 202
  • Take the 202 into town at the large new interception the 202 takes a right. Follow the 202 to a Y intersection.
  • Keep left at the Y and take the 202 towards the prison. There is a dirt/gravel road off to the right. This road has a house dug into the hill about ½ way up. This road is private property so please drive slowly. S L O W L Y past this house and up to the top.
  • At the top there is a house with horses so keep the speed and noise down to a min. The slope is about 300 yards past the house. We will need to park and walk to the launch site to keep the landing zone clear of cars.
  • The locals say that the stickers are always in full bloom so wear something to protect your legs and socks.
  • The grass can be very dry so do not park over any long weeds or we will have a fire.
  • If you arrive early please make room for others and keep the parking area under control from trash, fires etc. Carpool if possible.

It looks like it’s OUR responsibility again to make up for others misuse of private property. Let’s be on our best behavior and save these slopes for future use. Just like we always do.

Camping Info
There is a nice camping area at the glider port in Tehachapi.  The name of
the glider operation is Skylark North. 661-822-5267.  You could probably
park your rig at the flying site during the day.  There aren't too many
houses and if you park a little ways back from the flying site, you should
be fine.  The street is pretty narrow but there isn't any traffic.
